Greece obesity program faces delays amid funding shifts

Patients enrolled in the Greek Ministry of Health’s ‘Prolamvano’ obesity program are awaiting the resumption of services. The program is transitioning to a model involving state funding for the provision of medications, which would remove the financial burden from patients.

To restart the initiative, several administrative steps are required. This includes settling outstanding payments to pharmacists for medications distributed in May and June, and negotiating drug prices with pharmaceutical companies. Due to the high costs associated with the program, officials may revise eligibility criteria to limit the number of beneficiaries and control healthcare expenditures. Implementation of the updated program is expected by late September.
