Greece observes Psychosabbato of Saint Demetrios
In accordance with Orthodox tradition, the Psychosabbato of Saint Demetrios is observed on Saturday, October 24, 2026. This day is dedicated to prayer and remembrance for the souls of the departed, particularly in many regions of Northern Greece where the custom is deeply rooted.
During the services, the faithful participate in memorial rites and offer kollyva—a dish primarily made of boiled wheat mixed with sugar, raisins, and nuts. The wheat serves as a symbol of the hope for resurrection and eternal life, mirroring how a seed must fall to the earth to sprout anew. Families provide written names of the deceased to be commemorated during the liturgy, expressing love and gratitude for those who have passed away.
