Greece organic farmers' markets see rising participation and expansion

The number of organic farmers' markets and participating producers in Greece is experiencing steady annual growth. Currently, organized organic markets are concentrated in Attica, which hosts 24 markets with 350 producers, and Thessaloniki, which has five markets and 105 producers.

New legislation is expected to be passed soon, which would allow for the establishment of these markets across the rest of Greece. Dimitra Tsakiri, president of the Self-Managed Body of Organic Farmers' Markets of Attica, noted that expanding into the countryside would increase consumer access to affordable, high-quality products and allow local producers to sell in their home regions.

In Attica, municipalities are expected to approve four additional markets shortly. In Thessaloniki, the number of producers continues to rise, with new memberships recorded in 2024, 2025, and early 2026. These markets are characterized by being supplied exclusively by the producers themselves rather than traders.
