Greece outlines constitutional timetable for possible autumn early elections

The Greek Constitution (Article 41 paragraph 3) requires that when the Parliament is dissolved early, the presidential decree must simultaneously announce the election dates, with voting to take place within 30 days and the new Parliament to convene within a further 30 days.

Electoral law (Article 31 of Presidential Decree 26/2012, amended by Law 4648/2019) specifies that general parliamentary elections are held on the last Sunday before the 30‑day deadline expires after the decree, resulting in roughly a four‑week interval between the proclamation and the ballot.

If an autumn election were set for Sunday 27 September, the dissolution decree would need to be issued in late August; for elections on 4 or 11 October, the decree would have to be issued in early or mid‑September. The timing is being discussed amid speculation that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis might call early elections before the scheduled 2027 term ends.
