Greece outlines energy escape clause and renewable energy reforms

Greece's Minister of Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavrou, has outlined key government priorities ahead of the IMF meetings. A primary focus is the implementation of a 1 billion euro escape clause for energy, set to remain in effect until 2028.

Papastavrou emphasized the importance of new special spatial planning frameworks for tourism and renewable energy sources (RES). These frameworks aim to ensure regulated development that respects environmental legislation. He noted that renewable energy currently covers 55-60% of electricity demand, helping to mitigate rising costs caused by conflicts in the Middle East.

Additionally, the Minister highlighted urgent reforms regarding water management and urban planning. He stressed the need for a holistic approach to water, describing it as a strategic national resource, and noted the inefficiency of having 745 different organizations managing water resources. The government also intends to pursue maritime spatial planning and seismic surveys despite regional challenges.
