Greece Overhauls Labor Rules with Pay Transparency, Split Vacations and Digital Work Card
Greece has introduced a new labour market framework that tightens wage transparency, enforces equal pay for equal work and expands the Digital Work Card system. Employers must publish salary ranges for each vacancy and are prohibited from asking candidates about previous earnings, while workers can request information on pay levels for comparable positions. The reform also allows the annual leave to be taken in multiple, smaller blocks – the so‑called “split vacation” – provided it is agreed with the employer, offering greater flexibility for family or peak‑period needs.
The Digital Work Card, now being rolled out to additional sectors, records clock‑in and clock‑out times, overtime, breaks and leave, aiming to curb undeclared work and unpaid overtime. For employees it provides a protective record of actual working hours; for employers it creates new reporting obligations and requires more precise workforce management. Together, the measures seek to increase transparency, improve workers’ rights and modernise employment practices across Greece.
