Greece: PASOK criticizes judicial crisis following Supreme Court prosecutor's article
Evangelia Liakouli, PASOK's spokesperson for Justice, Institutions, and Transparency, has raised alarms regarding a deep crisis within the Greek judicial system. Her comments follow a controversial article by Vasilis Floridis, a Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court.
In his article, Floridis referred to a “vein of corruption in the judiciary” concerning a case involving 11 defendants, one of whom is a close relative of a sitting government official. Floridis characterized the charges against them as “unfounded.” Although he had handled the case during the appeal process, the Supreme Court rejected his proposal and referred the defendants to trial.
Liakouli criticized the decision to publicize these allegations through an article rather than initiating legal procedures to investigate potential corruption. She noted that the Ministry of Justice has maintained a “deafening silence” despite interventions and protests from the Union of Judges and Prosecutors and the Athens Bar Association. She warned that these developments undermine public trust in the judiciary and could jeopardize ongoing legal proceedings.
