Greece passes law awarding points for Greek Sign Language proficiency

The Federation of the Deaf of Greece (OM.K.E.) has welcomed the passage of Law 5331/2026, which introduces new legislative provisions regarding the certification of Greek Sign Language (GSL) knowledge. The new regulation allows for the awarding of additional points to candidates with certified GSL proficiency during public sector recruitment and selection processes.

This development follows meetings between OM.K.E. representatives and Akis Skertsos, the Minister of State and Coordinator of the Government for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Other recent measures implemented through this cooperation include the removal of age restrictions for deafness and hard-of-hearing allowances for individuals with a disability percentage of 67% or higher, and the creation of an accessibility service by ERT utilizing artificial intelligence for real-time sign language interpretation and subtitling.
