Greece pays €23.2 million to over 281,000 island residents

The Greek Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy has begun disbursing the Transport Equalisation (Μεταφορικό Ισοδυνάμου) fund, amounting to €23.2 million, to more than 281,000 residents of the country’s islands. The payment reimburses a portion of ferry and air‑travel costs incurred between 1 July and 31 December 2025 and completes the settlement of the 2025 equalisation scheme.

Minister Vasilis Kikilias said the programme aims to ensure connectivity, keep ticket prices stable and maintain safety, noting that “the payment … is a vital support for the daily lives of thousands of islanders.” The government has already allocated over €60 million in 2026 for island support, including transport costs and fuel subsidies.

The distribution covers all island regions, with allocations detailed per regional unit, and also includes teachers and other public‑service staff serving in remote island locations.
