Greece pension updates: Survivor benefits restored and payment schedules announced

Greece is implementing significant changes to pension distributions and survivor benefits for late August 2026. A new regulation will restore survivor pensions to 70% of the deceased's pension for approximately 8,552 public sector beneficiaries, reversing a previous reduction to 35% that occurred after a three-year period. This change is expected to increase monthly payments by an average of 470 euros per recipient, with a monthly fiscal cost of nearly 4 million euros.

Regarding the September 2026 pension schedule, e-EFKA has announced a two-phase payment process. The first phase begins on Wednesday, August 26, covering non-salaried funds (OAEE, OGA, ETAA), pensions issued via the unified e-EFKA system since 2017, and all private sector supplementary pensions. Funds are typically available in bank accounts by the afternoon of the preceding working day.

The second phase occurs on Friday, August 28, covering salaried funds (IKA-ETAM, Banks, OTE, DEH, etc.), NAT, ETAT, ETAP-MME, and public sector pensions.

Additionally, OPEKA has announced earlier-than-usual disbursements for August 2026 benefits. While the official date is Monday, August 31, funds such as housing allowances, birth grants, and disability benefits will become available starting the afternoon of Friday, August 28.
