A new 300 euro financial aid program for Greek pensioners is facing criticism due to strict age requirements. While the government has expanded income and asset thresholds to include more citizens, a mandatory age limit of 65 years remains a significant barrier.

Estimates suggest that approximately 473,700 retirees will be excluded from the benefit solely because they have not yet reached the age of 65, even if they meet all other financial criteria. When including other restrictions, the total number of ineligible citizens could approach 500,000.

The expanded income limits set the threshold at 25,000 euros annually for single individuals and 35,000 euros for married couples. Exceptions to the age rule are made for specific groups, such as disability pension recipients from e-EFKA and uninsured elderly individuals from OPΕΚΑ. Additionally, the age requirement is lowered to 60 for those receiving exclusively a widow's pension.

The aid is expected to reach approximately 1.87 million citizens, with payments scheduled to be completed by the end of November 2026.
