Greece announces economic relief measures for energy and debt

The Greek government has announced a package of four economic measures designed to support households and businesses facing the energy crisis and inflation.

A key component of the plan is the expansion of the debt settlement framework, allowing debtors to repay tax and social security obligations in up to 120 installments, with a minimum monthly payment of 30 euros. The interest rate for this arrangement is set at 5.84%. Additionally, the government is tightening regulations for servicers, with potential fines of up to 500,000 euros for those violating settlement terms.

To combat rising energy costs, the government is increasing diesel subsidies to 15 cents per liter for the first half of October, with total relief expected to reach 20 cents per liter. The government also aims to keep heating oil prices below 1.75 euros per liter.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has also submitted a proposal to the European Commission requesting greater fiscal flexibility to help citizens manage the increasing cost of energy.
