Greece advances new waste management and recycling strategies
Greece is preparing to overhaul its waste management system through three primary pillars: expanding alternative management to more waste categories, introducing financial incentives for businesses and municipalities, and the gradual implementation of the ‘Pay-as-you-throw’ model. Regulatory milestones are approaching, including final ministerial decisions and new recycling system guidelines from RAAEY.
The Attica region remains the most critical challenge due to high waste production and strained existing infrastructure. Key upcoming developments in November include potential progress on the Schisto waste processing unit and a new tender to convert the Liosia landfill into a processing facility.
Experts, including leadership from SEPAN, emphasize that national progress is hindered by the low recycling rates of organic waste and the unresolved infrastructure issues in Attica. Meanwhile, the waste management market is undergoing a period of restructuring characterized by corporate acquisitions and portfolio changes.
