Greece PM cites legal hurdles for Turkey's F-35 return

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed the potential return of Turkey to the F-35 fighter jet program during a press conference at the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair. Mitsotakis stated that Greece does not intend to advise the United States on which countries should receive defense systems, noting that such decisions rest solely with Washington.

However, the Prime Minister highlighted that there remain ‘very significant legal obstacles’ regarding Turkey’s participation. These hurdles stem from Turkey’s decision to acquire the Russian S-400 anti-aircraft system, which previously led to its exclusion from the program. Mitsotakis expressed doubt that these legal constraints could be overcome under current circumstances.

Regarding Greek defense capabilities, Mitsotakis noted that the country is modernizing its armed forces to adapt to modern warfare, including the integration of smaller, flexible systems like drones. He mentioned that Greek pilots are expected to begin training on their own F-35 aircraft within 2027 as part of a broader strategy to strengthen national deterrence.
