Greece political debate intensifies ahead of Thessaloniki International Fair

As the Thessaloniki International Fair approaches, a heated political debate has emerged regarding government measures to combat the cost of living. The Greek government is finalizing a support package aimed at households, small and medium-sized enterprises, and self-employed professionals to mitigate the impact of rising prices and the current international situation.

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis defended the administration, stating that no tax rates have been increased and noting the abolition of 83 taxes. Conversely, opposition leaders have launched sharp criticisms. Nikos Androulakis, president of PASOK-KINAL, plans to present an 11-point framework for debtor protection, expressing a readiness to confront established interests.

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) has also voiced strong opposition, criticizing the government for prioritizing military spending and tax breaks for large corporations over social needs. The KKE has scheduled a nationwide rally in Thessaloniki for September 5th. Additionally, Kyriakos Velopoulos of Elliniki Lysi criticized the recurring nature of these political debates during the fair.
