Greece political dispute over Mount Sinai Monastery agreement

A political controversy has emerged in Greece regarding the government's handling of the Mount Sinai Monastery. Opposition lawmaker Petros Polakis has challenged Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerepetritis, claiming that the government is pressuring the monastery's leadership to sign an undisclosed agreement with Egypt.

Polakis alleges that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been pressuring the monks by claiming a final decision from an Egyptian court is imminent on October 24, which would result in Egypt seizing ownership. However, Polakis presented an official document from Egypt dated October 11, which suggests that no trial date has been set for the monastery's appeal.

The opposition has raised concerns that this diplomatic pressure may be linked to business interests involving energy interconnection cables between Egypt, Greece, and Europe.
