Greece: Political disputes over fiscal surplus and new healthcare energy funding
In Greece, political and economic developments are unfolding regarding fiscal management and infrastructure investment. Nikos Pappas, Secretary of the SYRIZA Central Committee, has criticized the government over its handling of fiscal margins. Pappas claimed the government misled the public regarding the country's surplus, stating that the surplus reached 9.6 billion euros by the end of August and could reach between 11 and 12 billion euros by year-end.
Pappas also challenged the government's assertion that EU permission is required to reduce Special Consumption Tax on fuel, calling the claim “absolutely false” and noting that twelve other member states have implemented similar reductions. Additionally, he called on PASOK to reconsider its economic planning in light of government-imposed fiscal limits.
On the infrastructure front, Deputy Finance Minister Nikos Papathanasis announced that 13.9 million euros from the ESPA “Environment and Climate Change 2021-2027” program has been secured for the energy upgrade of healthcare facilities. The funding targets the General Hospital of Karditsa and the Center for Physical and Medical Rehabilitation (KE.F.I.AP), with a public expenditure of 5.3 million euros.
Furthermore, 8.6 million euros in public spending is allocated to the University General Hospital of Alexandroupoli. These upgrades include the installation of thermal insulation, LED lighting, solar photovoltaic systems, and the replacement of medical equipment with modern, low-energy technology to improve the energy efficiency ratings of these medical institutions.
