Greece Positioned as Strategic European Drug Manufacturing Hub Amid Major Pharma Investments

Over the past decade Greece’s pharmaceutical sector has attracted hundreds of millions of euros from domestic firms and multinational groups, expanding production capacity, modernising factories and boosting R&D. The EU’s post‑COVID emphasis on drug‑supply autonomy has reinforced Greece’s aim to become a key manufacturing centre for the European market, with exports reaching over 140 countries. Industry executives warn that mandatory clawback and rebate mechanisms, which force a large share of revenues back to the state, hinder further investment, and call for reforms to sustain growth.

Parallel efforts focus on turning Greek scientific research into marketable medicines. A conference organised by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens highlighted the “Bridging Innovation” initiative, part of the EU‑funded “Technology Bridge Network” linking universities, research institutes and pharma companies. Participants noted that while Greece produces high‑quality research, commercialisation lags behind other EU nations, and that stronger ecosystems for patents, funding and clinical testing are needed to shorten the path from lab to market.
