Greece positions Evros as a strategic European energy gateway

Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou has highlighted the strategic transformation of the Evros region and Alexandroupoli into a vital energy gateway for Southeast and Central Europe. During a visit to the Alexandroupoli Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) facilities, the Minister emphasized that the combination of the FSRU, a new power generation unit, various pipelines, and the Vertical Corridor is creating a new energy route from South to North.

The expansion of the Vertical Corridor toward Serbia and North Macedonia is expected to facilitate energy flow toward Hungary and Slovakia. The international significance of this infrastructure is underscored by the participation of 11 operators from 9 countries and 15 companies from 7 countries that have already committed capacity to the Vertical Corridor.

Additionally, the Minister noted that 86 million euros have been utilized to complete planned projects in the area following the devastating Dadia fires three years ago, contributing to the region's transition from a border zone to a central hub in the new European energy architecture.
