Greece postpones mandatory bank rent payments to July 2027

The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) has postponed the mandatory requirement for rent payments to be made exclusively via bank transfers to July 1, 2027. This decision, formalized by decision A. 1187/2026 from Governor Giorgos Pitsilis, marks a significant delay from previous timelines that had targeted April or October 2026.

The postponement is driven by technical challenges in establishing a seamless electronic link between property data, lease agreements, and banking transactions. Authorities aim to create a digital chain that connects the property, the landlord, the tenant, and the specific payment amount to ensure transparency and prevent tax evasion.

Key obstacles include discrepancies between various databases, such as the E9 property declarations and the Hellenic Cadastre, as well as delays in activating the Property Ownership and Management Registry (MIDA). The extra time will allow for the necessary data cross-referencing with payment service providers and provide landlords and tenants more time to adapt to the new regulatory framework.
