Greece Prepares for 2027 EU Council Presidency and Election Candidate List

The Greek government is finalising the priorities it will advance during its term as President of the Council of the European Union, which begins in July 2027. The agenda is expected to focus on the economy, defence, the Common Agricultural Policy, competitiveness, cohesion, EU enlargement and maritime security. In parallel, Greece is set to propose a new head for the Presidency office and will take a non‑permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in October 2025, with maritime security slated as a flagship issue.

Within the country, the ruling New Democracy party is assembling a "blue" electoral slate for the Larissa constituency ahead of the 2027 parliamentary elections. The list includes former ministers such as Christos Kellas and Christos Kapetanou, local officials, agricultural leaders and business figures, and the party is also seeking to increase female representation by adding candidates like Lena Xynopoulou and other women from municipal and professional backgrounds.
