Greece prioritizes cohesion and SMEs in EU budget talks

Giannis Chatzitheodosiou, President of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has outlined the critical implications of the proposed European Union budget for the 2028-2034 Multiannual Financial Framework. The European Commission's proposal, approaching €2 trillion, shifts focus toward competitiveness, defense, security, and technology.

For Greece, the negotiations are vital for economic development and the survival of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Key priorities for the Greek position include securing Cohesion Policy funding to address regional inequalities and demographic decline, as well as protecting the Common Agricultural Policy to ensure food security and climate resilience.

Furthermore, the discussions emphasize the need for new common resources and financial tools to support cross-border infrastructure and energy security. Chatzitheodosiou highlights that SMEs require simplified procedures, microcredits, and technical support to thrive within this new budgetary landscape.
