Greece projected to add 450 MW of wind power this year

Greece is projected to add 450 MW of new wind power capacity this year, according to data from the European industry association WindEurope. During the first half of the year, the country installed 321 MW, which represents a doubling of the 152 MW installed during the same period last year. This expansion included the installation of 66 wind turbines, each with an average capacity of 5 MW. Following these additions, Greece's total wind power capacity has exceeded 6 GW, contributing to a broader renewable energy capacity of over 18 GW.

On a continental scale, WindEurope reports that Europe is heading toward a record year for wind energy, with 8.8 GW of new capacity installed across the region. Germany led European installations with 3.37 GW. Total installed wind capacity in Europe has reached 311 GW, comprising 270 GW from onshore and 40.9 GW from offshore sources. The growth aims to meet climate targets and reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports.

In Greece, the government is planning new tenders for wind and solar projects integrated with battery storage. This strategy seeks to balance solar energy production by enabling green electricity generation across a wider 24-hour window. The government has reportedly submitted a request to the European Commission regarding a portfolio that could reach 4.5 GW, with wind energy accounting for up to 3 GW.
