Greece proposes 10% tax on cryptocurrency capital gains

Greece has released draft legislation through the Ministry of National Economy and Finance that proposes a 10% capital gains tax on cryptocurrency profits. The measure is currently under public consultation and is expected to reach parliament in November 2026.

Under the proposed framework, annual capital gains of up to €500 would be exempt from taxation. Taxable events would include selling cryptocurrency for fiat currency, using digital assets to purchase goods or services, or contributing crypto toward company capital. The tax is calculated based on the difference between the acquisition price and the transfer value, accounting for direct transaction costs.

A notable provision allows taxpayers to voluntarily declare cryptocurrency profits from previous years within a 12-month window following the law’s implementation. This voluntary declaration would allow individuals to regularize their tax status without facing fines or interest.

However, the draft includes a strict requirement for documentation. If a taxpayer cannot provide proof of the original purchase cost, the acquisition price will be treated as zero, meaning the 10% tax will be applied to the entire sale amount rather than just the profit.
