Greece proposes 10% tax on cryptocurrency capital gains

The Greek Ministry of National Economy and Finance has introduced a new bill for public consultation that aims to close legislative gaps regarding the cryptocurrency market. The proposal includes a 10% tax on capital gains realized from the transfer of crypto assets for individuals.

Capital gains will be calculated as the difference between the acquisition price and the transfer price, with specific rules for documenting transactions and determining average acquisition costs for consecutive purchases. Gains of up to 500 euros per tax year will remain untaxed, and the exchange of one crypto asset for another will not trigger a taxable event. Additionally, returns from activities such as lending, liquidity provision, and staking will be taxed as interest at a 10% rate.

Regarding inheritance, gifts, and parental provisions, crypto assets will be classified as intangible movable property located abroad. Their value will be determined in euros based on the value from the day preceding the tax liability.
