Greece proposes EU emergency framework for migration crises

The Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum is developing a proposal for a European emergency framework to manage mass and weaponized migration pressure. Migration Minister Thanos Plevris is expected to present this initiative at the upcoming EU Home Affairs Council.

The proposal, which stems from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s recent advocacy for addressing hybrid threats, suggests the ability to suspend asylum procedures and implement immediate returns for those entering illegally, in accordance with European and international law. This follows Mitsotakis’s assertion that migration is increasingly being used as a tool of geopolitical pressure by state and non-state actors.

In a related development, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also referenced the concept of a new ‘European Emergency Response Framework’ during a recent speech.
