Greece proposes European Spectrum Union to fund 6G technology

Greece has proposed the creation of a ‘European Spectrum Union’ to generate funding for 6G technology development and to support the European Union budget. Presented to EU ministers by Kyriakos Pierrakakis, the Minister of National Economy and Finance and President of the Eurogroup, the plan suggests allocating a portion of revenues from national mobile spectrum auctions to common technological investments.

The proposal estimates a preliminary design scale of approximately 12 to 15 billion euros in potential funding. This figure is a preliminary design estimate rather than a definitive forecast and does not include potential future contributions from 5G usage rights.

If approved by all 27 member states, these resources could assist in financing the EU's new multiannual financial framework for the 2028–2034 period, which is expected to reach approximately 2 trillion euros. Such funds would be intended to address increasing demands for competitiveness and defense spending while reducing the fiscal burden on the Union.
