Greece proposes new EU funding framework for agricultural disasters
The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food is proposing a new European funding framework to better address agricultural disasters caused by the climate crisis. These proposals will be part of Greece's demands during negotiations for the new Multiannual Financial Framework and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for 2028-2034.
The plan aims to create a stronger European safety net that covers market disruptions, major natural disasters, extreme weather events, and phytosanitary or veterinary crises. A key objective is to establish a clear hierarchy for activating financial tools, ensuring that European solidarity mechanisms are utilized first before tapping into national funds. This approach is intended to protect resources earmarked for investment and the modernization of agricultural production.
The necessity for these reforms follows significant damage caused by storms such as ‘Ianos’ and ‘Daniel’ in Thessaly, as well as major wildfires in northern Evia and Evros, which destroyed crops, livestock, and critical agricultural infrastructure.
