Greece proposes new investment accounts for minors
The Greek Ministry of National Economy and Finance has released a bill for public consultation introducing the Individual Investment Account for Minors (A.E.L.A.). Designed to encourage long-term family savings and financial literacy, the program targets infants up to two years old, with implementation expected to begin in 2027.
Under the proposed framework, individuals can contribute up to 10,000 euros annually per child. The state will provide a matching contribution of 100% for eligible deposits, capped at an initial 1,200 euros per year, a limit set to increase by 10% every five years. Funds are intended to be invested in financial products such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds.
Account holders can choose from four investment profiles ranging from conservative (100% fixed income) to dynamic (100% equity exposure). To ensure long-term growth, capital is generally locked until the beneficiary reaches age 18, though exceptions are permitted for serious health issues or the death of a guardian. The bill also includes provisions for increasing the birth grant for a fourth child to 4,500 euros and raising the tax-free threshold for gifts to 6,000 euros annually.
