Greece proposes new support measures for farmers and fishers

Greek officials and parliamentary committees are proposing new measures to support the country's primary sector, specifically targeting farmers, livestock breeders, and fishers facing rising costs.

MP Andreas Katsaniotis presented the findings of an inter-party parliamentary committee focused on strengthening the primary sector. The report identifies four priorities: reducing production costs, supporting young farmers, developing modern infrastructure, and improving the connection between production, scientific knowledge, and the market. Katsaniotis highlighted the potential for Achaia and Western Greece to become export hubs through partnerships between local producers, cooperatives, and the University of Patras.

Simultaneously, Minister of Rural Development and Food Margaritis Schoinas announced three additional support measures for the fishing industry. These measures aim to address high fuel costs and the modernization of the Greek fishing fleet. The proposed interventions include additional fuel subsidies, the utilization of available fishing program resources, and the renewal of the fleet using European funding to address the aging nature of the current vessels.
