ECB raises interest rates as Greece launches debt transparency platform

The European Central Bank (ECB) has raised its key interest rates by 25 basis points, bringing the main rate to 2.5%. This decision, effective September 16, 2026, aims to combat persistent inflation, which remains well above the 2% target due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and energy market volatility. ECB President Christine Lagarde noted that while the Eurozone economy shows resilience, inflation risks remain upwardly biased.

In Greece, the government is launching a new digital platform called ‘Synepeia’ (Consistency) by the end of the year. The tool is designed to increase transparency regarding the state's outstanding debts to private entities, including suppliers, taxpayers, and pensioners. As of late July 2026, total overdue public debts stood at approximately 3.27 billion euros, with public hospitals remaining the largest debtors.

The ‘Synepeia’ platform will provide real-time data on which public agencies have paid their invoices and which remain outstanding. It aims to create a ‘black list’ of systemic non-payers, exposing the administrations of defaulting agencies to public scrutiny to improve liquidity in the real economy.
