Greece railway safety upgrade faces bureaucratic delays
The implementation of the GSM-R safety system for the Greek railway network is currently stalled due to administrative delays and bureaucratic processes. This project, valued at approximately 51.3 million euros including VAT, aims to upgrade communication systems from outdated telegraphs and VHF radio to modern digital standards.
The procurement process, which includes the supply of necessary portable equipment for several key sections including Kiato-Rio, Tithorea-Domokos, Thessaloniki-Eydomeni, Paleofarsalos-Kalabaka, and Larissa-Volos, was transferred to the Strategic Contracts Unit of the National Development Fund (PPF).
Despite the preliminary consultation being launched last December, the project has reportedly been awaiting approval from the relevant Transport Managing Authority since late April. This delay raises concerns regarding the potential loss of European funding and the continued use of outdated communication technology in the rail network.
