Greece ranked top European retirement destination in 2026 index

The International Living magazine’s Annual Global Retirement Index 2026 placed Greece first among 24 European nations, moving up from seventh place. The ranking highlights Greece’s moderate everyday costs, pleasant climate, quality medical care, diverse geography and strong community life, which together make it especially appealing for retirees, including Germans who can relocate within the EU more easily than moving outside Europe.

Greece also remains a major tourist draw, with cultural nuances that visitors should know: over 96% of the population follows the Orthodox Christian faith, there is a tourist tax of €0.50‑€4 per night depending on hotel class, water supply can be limited on some islands, and local gestures differ – a head shake means “yes” while a nod means “no”. Dress modestly when entering churches or monasteries, and be aware of local customs such as dragon‑flying on Rosenmontag. These insights help both retirees and holidaymakers navigate life in Greece.
