Greece ranks among Europe’s top travel picks and becomes the priciest Mediterranean holiday spot in 2026

A recent INSETE study based on a GWI Travel survey finds Greece still among Europeans’ preferred overseas destinations for 2026. The country placed third among German and Italian travelers, fourth among British and French visitors, and sixth among Spaniards. The report notes that while demand for sea‑side vacations and city‑breaks remains strong, geopolitical and economic uncertainty is pushing many travelers toward nearer‑by locations, which could disadvantage Greece compared with more easily reachable Mediterranean rivals.

Separately, the price‑comparison platform Hellosafe released its 2026 ranking of holiday costs. Greece was identified as the most expensive Mediterranean destination and the fifth‑most expensive country for vacations in Europe, with an estimated average daily cost of €168 per person—just €1 more than Luxembourg. The ranking is based on AI‑driven analysis of accommodation, food, transport and activity prices, excluding airfare. The study highlights Greece’s high cost despite relatively low average wages compared with richer EU members.
