Greece Ranks Among Top European Holiday Destinations for 2026

A new study by the Institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation (INSETE) using GWI Travel data shows Greece as one of the most attractive holiday spots for European travelers in 2026. The research finds Greece is the third most popular overseas destination for German and Italian tourists, fourth for British and French visitors, and sixth for Spaniards.

Beach‑focused vacations remain the main draw, but interest in short city breaks and outdoor activities such as hiking is rising. More than 75% of respondents say they prefer destinations nearer to home, a trend that favours Mediterranean countries but also highlights Greece’s relative distance from many markets. Geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty are prompting travelers to postpone planning and favour last‑minute bookings. The study notes significant variations in spending, trip length and booking patterns across national markets, suggesting a need for tailored tourism promotion. Growing demand for nature‑based experiences could help spread visitors to lesser‑known regions, extend the season beyond summer and reduce overcrowding at popular sites.
