Israel returns 22 ancient Greek artifacts to Greece

Israel has returned 22 ancient Greek artifacts to Greece that were previously removed from the country illegally. The handover ceremony took place at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, attended by Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni and Israeli Ambassador Pninat Yanay, alongside Amir Ganor, director of the Israel Antiquities Authority’s Theft Prevention Unit.

The collection, dated between approximately 700 BC and 320 BC, includes 15 Attic vases (including black-figure and red-figure varieties), six Corinthian vases, and a bronze female statuette. While the specific circumstances of the items' illegal removal and discovery in Israel were not disclosed, the return marks the first time Israel has repatriated antiquities to Greece.

Minister Mendoni described the event as a landmark for bilateral cooperation in protecting cultural heritage and combating the international crime of antiquities trafficking. This cultural exchange occurs amid strengthening ties between Greece and Israel, which have recently expanded cooperation in energy and defense sectors.
