Greece records 23% jump in organ donations for 2025
The National Organ Transplantation Organization (EOM) reported a 23% increase in organ donations in Greece for 2025 compared with 2024, marking the fifth consecutive year of growth. A total of 137 donors were recorded, of which 88 were utilized by eight intensive care units (ICUs) that together accounted for 64% of all donors.
The leading hospitals were the Atikon ICU, which turned 17 donors into 40 transplanted organs, and the Sotiria ICU, which supplied the largest pool of donors (19). Other notable contributors included the ICUs of the KAT Hospital, the Korgialenios Benakeio, the Evangelismos, the Papageorgiou in Thessaloniki, and the university hospitals of Ioannina and Patras.
Donor demographics showed a predominance of men (66%) with an average age of 56.3 years; half of the donors were over 60. Cultural and religious concerns remained obstacles, as 30% of potential donors (91 families) declined consent.
