Greece records 579 suicides in 2025 as experts urge early prevention

In observance of World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, health experts are calling for a shift in how suicide is addressed, emphasizing that prevention must begin long before a crisis occurs. The theme for this year is ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide.’

Data from the KLIMAKA Suicide Observatory indicates that Greece recorded 579 suicides in 2025. Between 2020 and 2025, the total number of recorded deaths reached 2,946. While Greece maintains some of the lowest recorded suicide rates in Europe, officials warn against complacency.

Kyriakos Katsadoros, Scientific Director of KLIMAKA and a representative to the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), emphasized the importance of identifying vulnerability early. He noted that prevention efforts should be integrated into primary healthcare, schools, workplaces, and communities. Globally, more than 720,000 people die by suicide annually, while the World Health Organization reports over 120,000 deaths per year within the European Region.
