ELSTAT reports slight rise in Greek live births in Q1 2026
The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) published data for the first quarter of 2026 showing 15,946 live births in Greece—8,184 boys and 7,762 girls—up from 15,889 live births (8,182 boys, 7,707 girls) in the same period of 2025, a marginal increase of 57 births (0.4%). Stillbirths fell to 96, a 3% drop from 99 a year earlier.
Month‑by‑month, births rose by 2.6% in January and 1.2% in March, while February recorded a 2.9% decline. The ratio of births to mothers of Greek nationality versus foreign mothers moved to 9.5 : 1, compared with 8.9 : 1 a year prior. Regional analysis showed increases in seven of the thirteen Greek regions, with the largest absolute gains in Thessaly (+62 births), the Peloponnese (+56) and Central Macedonia (+31). The sharpest declines occurred in Central Greece (‑81), Attica (‑32) and the Ionian Islands (‑31).
