Greece records second‑largest EU airfare surge in June 2026

Airfare prices in Greece rose 15.1% year‑on‑year in June 2026, making the country the second‑largest increaser in the European Union after Austria, which posted a 22.3% rise. Eurostat data show that across the EU, air transport prices increased 3.1% in June compared with the previous year, with international routes up 4.5% and domestic routes up 2.0%.

The jump in Greek fares reflects heightened demand during the peak tourist season and follows a period of pronounced volatility in air‑price trends since early 2025, when the EU recorded its highest annual increase of 13.7% in April. Belgium also posted strong gains, while Austria and Greece have consistently been among the fastest‑rising markets.

Eurostat attributes the overall trend to shifting travel demand, seasonal factors and the impact of recent geopolitical developments, with international ticket prices driving most of the increase.
