Greece regains official PPR-free status

Greece has officially regained its status as a country free of Peste des petits ruminants (PPR), effective August 18, 2026. The decision was made by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) following a successful eradication effort and a formal request by Greek veterinary authorities.

WOAH confirmed that Greece meets the requirements of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code after evaluating evidence submitted by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food. The international organization specifically commended Greece for its transparency and efficiency in detecting the disease and managing outbreaks.

The restoration of this status follows a significant veterinary operation aimed at containing the highly contagious disease. The achievement is recognized as a result of coordinated efforts between various national agencies, including the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, regional veterinary services, and academic institutions such as the University of Thessaly, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and the Agricultural University of Athens.
