Greece regulator sets high penalties for electricity theft
The Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy and Water (RAAEW) has issued a new decision establishing significant charges for electricity theft in Greece. Penalties can be applied retroactively for up to five years.
For standard households, the cost for unrecorded electricity consumption reaches approximately 65 cents per kilowatt-hour, while businesses face charges exceeding 67 cents per kilowatt-hour. These rates include a 100% surcharge, effectively doubling the cost. For businesses, the cost can reach up to 671 euros per megawatt-hour, and for households, up to 652 euros per megawatt-hour.
Beneficiaries of the Social Home Bill (KOT) are subject to lower rates with a 50% surcharge instead of 100%. Specifically, costs for KOT A, B, and C categories are approximately 31, 38, and 27 cents per kilowatt-hour, respectively. In addition to the electricity costs, those identified as having tampered with meters will also be liable for the inspection expenses incurred by HEDNO (DEDDIE).
