Greece reinstates Honorary Consulate in New Orleans

Greece has reinstated its Honorary Consulate in New Orleans, restoring official representation in the city following the closure of the previous consulate due to damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. John D. Georges has assumed the duties of Honorary Consul.

Archbishop Elpidophoros of America sent a video message to bless the reopening, highlighting the deep historical roots of the Greek community in New Orleans. He noted the city's significant role in the early development of organized Orthodoxy in the Americas.

The Greek presence in the region dates back to the mid-18th century, with records mentioning sailors like Miguel Dragon arriving as early as 1766. In the 1860s, Greek merchants such as Nicholas Benachi and John Botassi worked to establish a formal religious community. This led to the 1866 construction of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in the Tremé neighborhood, recognized as the first Greek-built temple in North and South America.
