Greece rejects Libyan maritime claims in diplomatic clarification
Diplomatic sources have clarified that recent reports regarding a new Libyan Note Verbale are inaccurate. The document in question is not a new diplomatic move but a statement from last August that reiterates Libya’s long-standing positions.
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already responded through official diplomatic channels, rejecting the claims made by Tripoli as unsubstantiated. Greek officials emphasize that in the absence of a formal agreement on maritime boundaries, Greece applies the median line principle in accordance with international law. It is noted that Libya has also declared maritime blocks based on this same line.
Despite these disagreements, Greece and Libya are continuing bilateral dialogue regarding the delimitation of their Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ). Greek authorities stress that participating in these negotiations does not imply acceptance of unilateral Libyan claims, nor does it suspend the exercise of Greece’s legal sovereign rights.
