Greece rejects summoning U.S. Ambassador over alleged remarks

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis stated in Parliament that there is no need to summon the U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoil, to provide explanations regarding controversial alleged remarks. The controversy stems from reports, including by the Wall Street Journal, suggesting Guilfoil may have remarked, “We can do this here too,” implying potential interference in domestic governance.

Gerapetritis maintained that Greece views the United States as an “equal ally” and deferred to statements made by Environment Minister Stavros Papastavrou, who was present during the alleged incident and asserted that no threats or pressures were directed at Greece.

Opposition lawmaker Sia Anagnostopoulou challenged this stance, arguing that summoning the ambassador is a matter of “national dignity” given the gravity of the reports published in American media. The debate follows a recent visit to Athens by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the inauguration of the renovated U.S. Embassy.
