Greece rejects Turkey-Libya maritime memorandum
Greek government officials have denounced the maritime memorandum between Turkey and Libya, labeling it illegal and void under international law. Deputy Foreign Minister Tasos Chatzivasileiou stated that the agreement produces no legal results and remains invalid regardless of its ratification by eastern Libya.
Chatzivasileiou emphasized that Greece is planning connectivity projects in the regions covered by the memorandum and highlighted the exemplary maritime zone agreement signed with Egypt as a counter-measure. He also clarified that Greece is the sole authority responsible for licensing the proposed European energy cable project involving Cyprus, Israel, and the EU, dismissing claims from the Turkish side.
Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis added that the memorandum is unsubstantiated according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. He defended the administration's foreign policy, noting that Greece has strengthened its position through maritime boundary agreements with Italy and Egypt, as well as through the modernization of its defense capabilities.
