Greece rent refund: Eligibility and tax declaration deadlines
Approximately one million renters in Greece, including families and students, are eligible for a rent refund based on expenses incurred during 2025. The subsidy, which is expected to be paid by the end of November, is calculated as 1/12 of the total annual rent paid. For primary residences, the amount can reach up to 800 euros, with an additional 50 euros for each dependent child. Eligible renters can also receive separate refunds for student housing if specific conditions are met.
To ensure receipt of the funds, taxpayers must ensure their E1 tax declarations are accurate. The deadline to correct errors or omissions is September 30, 2026. Common mistakes include entering monthly rent amounts instead of annual totals in the designated codes (811-816 for primary residence and 817-822 for student housing).
Eligibility is determined by annual family income thresholds: up to 25,000 euros for single individuals, and 35,000 euros for married individuals or partners, with an increase of 5,000 euros for each dependent child. For single-parent families with children, the limit reaches 39,000 euros, also increasing by 5,000 euros per child.
