Greece repays €2.5bn to EFSF using bank reprivatisation proceeds
Greece has completed an early repayment of €2.5 billion to the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF). The funds were sourced from the reprivatisation of Greek banks that had previously received support from the Hellenic Financial Stability Fund (HFSF). This move follows a previous early repayment of €6.94 billion in June.
EFSF CEO Pierre Gramegna stated that the repayment is “yet another indication of the progress Greece has made in strengthening its economy and financial system,” noting that it “sends a message of confidence to the markets.” The EFSF and the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) retain contractual rights over remaining proceeds held by the Hellenic Corporation of Assets and Participations (HCAP).
In a separate economic development, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Greece has seen significant growth. Data from the Bank of Greece shows that FDI reached €7.6 billion in the first seven months of 2026, more than doubling compared to the same period in 2025. Key drivers included UniCredit increasing its stake in Alpha Bank and a major capital increase by the Public Power Corporation (PPC), which attracted interest from investors such as CVC Capital Partners.
