The National Public Health Organization (EODY) reported a total of 180 Legionnaires disease cases in Greece for 2025. Most patients were male and over 65 years old, and the peak of diagnoses occurred in September.
Two surveillance streams captured the cases: 100 were entered through the Mandatory Reporting System for Diseases (Σ. Υ. Δ. Ν) and 80 through the European Legionella Disease Surveillance Network (ELDSNet). The majority of travel‑related infections were linked to stays in the regions of Crete, the Ionian Islands and the South Aegean. The overall incidence was 0.8 cases per 100,000 residents and no epidemic outbreak was recorded.
Legionella bacteria, commonly found in warm water systems (25‑42 °C), cause the infection by aerosol inhalation. The incubation period ranges from 2 to 10 days. High‑risk groups include people over 50, smokers and those with chronic illnesses, with a reported case‑fatality rate of 5‑30 %.
