Greece reports 2.1% rise in April industrial output and 5.2% jump in May inflation

The seasonally adjusted General Industrial Production Index for April 2026 rose 2.1% from March, marking a rebound after a 3.5% decline the previous month. Over the January‑April period, the index was 4.4% higher than the same span in 2025. Gains were led by the electricity supply sector (+9.8%) and manufacturing (+1.0%), while the electronics‑computer sector fell the most. The transport equipment subsector recorded the strongest sector‑wide increase, whereas coal, lignite and related mining activities saw the steepest drop.

In May 2026 the Harmonised Consumer Price Index climbed 5.2% year‑on‑year, up from a 2.5% increase in the previous year. The rise was driven mainly by energy and housing costs, with gasoline and natural gas each about 21% higher and diesel up 24.4%. Food prices also surged, notably beef (+17.6%), lamb (+16.2%) and fish (+12.6%). Housing-related expenses rose 11.6%, while health insurance costs increased 7%. Some categories, such as certain cereals and meats, experienced modest price declines, partially offsetting the overall inflation pressure.
